JH Yang is a senior Fashion Design major and in her latest collection, “Lookism: The Décalcomanie Beneath”, she exemplifies the negative effects that social media has had on our lives through her intricate designs. Yang believes that today’s society is easily manipulated by the social media content we consume that constantly pressures us to be the people we see online. “People want the perfect bodies and perfect lifestyles that they see” she says which inspired her design technique known as décalcomanie. With this French word meaning “to trace madness”, Yang used the technique to create reflections that symbolize “people’s desire to become the idolized versions they see online.”

Yang initially struggled to make her concept come to life through applying her innovative technique to her materials, but she persevered in her endeavors to make her ingenious collection. Yang gives this advice to new designers coming to Cornell: explore the unconventional, don’t limit yourself, and don’t think you can’t make your crazy ideas come to life. She also says to never give up and while “that’s so cliché”, she knows that any talented designer will find a solution to their problems. Yang is truly a visionary who can find inspiration in the most otherworldly mediums and she will surely leave a lasting impact on Cornell.
