Design spotlight: Beckett Fine

“You’ll learn a lot, and it’s free information”

Inspired by his desire to add a stylistic twist to Cornell merch, Level 3 designer Beckett Fine ’24 chose to illustrate his imagination of the ideal college merch through his collection, “Scratch”. As a Fashion major passionate about university garment, Fine has synthesized a collection of five outfits that demonstrate a fusion of sporty streetwear and the Cornell label. The collection ranges from hoodies to baggier pants and represents the type of products that he would want to purchase from the Cornell Store, according to Fine.

Despite his earlier struggles with time management and budget, Fine was able to overcome such obstacles with his passion for the design process, which was fueled by the opportunities provided by CFC.

“[CFC] is a great opportunity because it gives you a reason to make things,” Fine said. “And this is important because many designers struggle with when to start making their projects and put together their portfolio, which is an important part of getting jobs and internships.”

Moreover, Fine’s collection is funded by the Barbara Kuhlman Grant, which he earned during the Fall 2022 semester. As a grant meant to fund the interests of students outside of the classroom, the Barbara Kuhlman Grant helped to cover the expenses of fabric and other materials for Fine’s collection, for which he expressed gratitude.

Scratch is correlated with Ivy Archive, a new brand that Fine is launching. The brand aims to feature the Cornell logo embedded in limited edition hoodies. Such an initiative was invigorated by his firsthand experience of the design process at CFC, Fine noted.

You’ll learn a lot, and it’s free information.

“Reach out to upperclassmen,” said Fine, when asked to offer advice to prospective CFC members. “There’s a lot of advice you can get on the technical design aspects and also if you’re trying to fill out your general design process. You’ll learn a lot, and it’s free information.”
